CvSU officials led the turnover of the results of the University鈥檚 seagrass research studies to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) – Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) Cavite and the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Maragondon during a ceremony themed 鈥淩ooted in Data, Safeguarding Cavite鈥檚 Seagrass Ecosystem鈥 held at the University Interdisciplinary Research Building, March 19, 2026.
This undertaking also highlighted the importance of partnerships among universities, national agencies, and local governments in addressing environmental issues and challenges.
In a special message, Dr. Ma. Agnes P. Nuestro, University President, underscored the University鈥檚 pivotal role in the formulation of sustainable policies.
Mr. Glenn Bryan A. Creencia, CvSU鈥檚 designated Faculty Researcher, then presented the outcomes of the seagrass research initiatives undertaken by the University. Seagrasses provide various ecosystem services, including food and habitat for many organisms. Additionally, they play a crucial role in oxygen production and carbon sequestration, making them essential in mitigating climate change.
Mr. Creencia rediscovered the last seagrass ecosystem of Cavite in February 2020. According to him, there are seven seagrass species present in the coastal waters of Maragondon. Moreover, the University also initiated conservation efforts through ex-situ seagrass propagation and transplantation.
In response, Ms. Judaline A. Fabro, Assistant Management Services Division Chief and in-charge of the Office of DENR-PENRO Cavite, and Mr. Noah M. Caasi, Municipal Administrator of LGU Maragondon, delivered their pledge of acceptance and commitment to the utilization of these research outputs in the development of their data-driven policies.聽(with report from CAFENR and Research Center)
